Depends on what you wanna do. Mesmer is pretty popular for skills like distortion and blackout. There's also the so known 'Bunny thumpers' who use a warrior secondary and play like a warrior. Other than that, it's extremeley rare to see anything different.

The thing with Ranger is that they're very self sufficient so a secondry class isn't actually needed to make them more effective. Most people choose Monk for the unlimited res ability since a Ranger is usually 1 of the last party members alive when things go pear shaped.

There's any number of uses for all the secondary professions:
Warriors:
IAS stances
Watch Yourself, etc.
Monks:
Hex removal
Hard Rez (number one option)
Mesmer:
Hex and Enchant removal
Distortion
Blackout (pvp mostly)
Elementalist:
Conjure x element.
Necros:
Touch rangers (grrrr)
Ritualists:
Weapon spells... but they're not really that viable
Assassins:
Dagger Ranger
Evasion/shadow step skills
My favorite happens to be /W at the moment, because I really like Flurry and Frenzy.

There are a good number of existing threads that already have this question, so in future, you may wish to use the search button before asking a question like this.
In response to the question however, I think Snipious Max answered it well. I've never really seen mesmer secondary as a really good PvE secondary, but in PvP it can work well with a good number of builds. I have always made my rangers monk secondary since I tend to use mostly ranger skills and keep the monk secondary for the hard rez (rebirth). However, like Snipious, I have been playing with warrior secondary a good bit recently. I have found that Needling Shot with Frenzy can finish off an enemy very quickly as long as you have another stance to cancel out Frenzy when you are under pressure.

If there really was a best secondary proffesion, why do you see an equal distribution of R/Mo, R/N, R/Me, R/W and R/Rts? The Ranger is often referred to as 'the great versatility', meaning its range of skills can do anything from tank to shutdown, spike to degen. Go mess with a few styles, then find out what you really enjoy doing.

rangers are very self suficient from any way.
most of the time for PVE i have R/Mo only for rebirth, rest is all ranger skills.
for PVP its either R/W or R/Me, but that depends on what you wanna do

Wow, a lot of people by pass the Rit.
Benefits of the Ritualist:
Mend Body and Soul - If you are near a spirit (Recouperation, Life, Destruction, Restoration, Favourable Winds, Equinox, Famine, etc.) you heal and remove 1 condition for each spirit near you.
Weapon Spells - cannot be removed, good for healing, damage, life-stealing, etc.
Hard Rez - Flesh of My Flesh, Restoration, Lively Was..., etc.
Moving your spirits around
Other than that, everyone has basically stated the benefits of the other professions.

^ /Rits are pretty bad, imho. Weapon spells are expensive, and the durations are short. Flesh of my Flesh is a poor rez compared to Rebirth. None of the spirits a Ranger uses are really worth moving.

Mesmer is also good for solo/dual farming (all the builds with PR and or ER/mantra of xxx, AV/SV famine, etc.).

In PvE pugs I only run /Mo.
Only reason: Rebirth
As a ranger I will be somewhere near the back of the group most of the time.
That's a good place to get someone to that dies in the middle of a group of hostiles.
And, since I have high expertise, most of my skills don't cost that much energy.
At the usual 13 points, it's 2, 5, 7, 12 instead of 5, 10, 15, 25.
Meaning I can start firing skills right away.
And with a Zealous bow, I will have the energy for most skills in no time. Even when I don't use barrage.
Only exception is when I am trapping.
